Chapter 8 - Emerson

Emerson felt like he had whiplash. What was happening to him? It was like he was ricocheting from emotion to emotion faster than he knew how to keep up with—from meeting her and realizing what she could mean to him, to deciding that they could never be together, to the dizzying moment when she’d kissed him and made all his dreams come true in a heartbeat … at least, that was what he’d thought had happened. Now, he wasn’t so sure. Standing here at the campsite, staring at her back as she set about packing up their camp, as though what she’d just said hadn’t been the most devastating thing anyone had ever said to him in his long, long life …

But what could he do? It was abundantly clear now where her priorities lay. It was her work that consumed her. Not him, as much as he’d dared to allow himself to hope that that was the case. He’d thought … the way she’d looked at him, the way their bodies had joined so beautifully, the way she’d seemed to thrill at his every touch … he’d thought there was something there. That their explosive sexual chemistry meant something … meant that she might feel the same way about him that he felt about her. That she was his soulmate was beyond a doubt, to him … but in hoping that he was hers, that was where he’d made a fatal mistake.

Because her soulmate was her work.

He wanted to resent her, he really did. He tried to invite anger in as he helped her pack up the campsite, methodical in his movements, even as his thoughts raged and spiraled. But he just couldn’t summon anger with her. She’d been nothing but honest with him ever since she’d gotten here. The love of her life was her work as a wildlife photographer and as a journalist. How could he fault her for leading him on when she’d never said anything to the contrary? The encounter they’d shared, their connection, their chemistry … it was just sex. Amazing, mind-blowing, life-altering sex. Sex that had left him feeling like a completely new person. But just sex.

”We’re not far off, I think,” he said finally, breaking a silence that had lasted for almost an hour. It was the longest they’d been quiet since the trip began, and he thought he caught a look of relief in her eyes as she looked at him. So she was relieved they were going back to normal. She preferred they pretend that their encounter last night hadn’t happened? Confusion and hurt warred for dominance in his chest, and he forced both of them down, ignoring the discontented rumbling of his wounded dragon. He could do that. If that was what she wanted, he thought with a pang of real grief, he could do it.

He could pretend that the best night of his life could just be put behind him without a second thought.

“Oh yeah? One more cliff?”

”One or two.
